A Swayamvara in ancient India, was a practice of choosing a husband, from among a list of suitors, by a girl of marriageable age (usually a princess). Swayam in Sanskrit means self and vara means groom in this context. Taking this idea to Television, Sol produced India’s first marriage based reality show, with Rakhi Sawant, a controversial celebrity as the one finding a groom. The show was very successful, and in fact the ratings of the finale of season one, which was in 2009, still remain unsurpassed today on Indian Television.
