Monday 7 May 1945 – the Second World War finally comes to an end and a new, brighter future beckons. In the midst of central Stockholm celebrations, two strangers come together with a quick kiss, parting company immediately after. Upper-class girl Nina and kitchen hand Calle don’t yet know that their brief encounter will come to have tumultuous consequences for many people.

For the Löwander family the end of the war comes as an immense relief. They are running Djurgårdskällaren, a high-end restaurant in the heart of Stockholm. During the war, the oldest son Gustaf has managed to keep the restaurant afloat by somewhat questionable means. He intends to carry on running it exactly the same way it has always been run.

When the middle son Peter returns home after the war, he discovers that the family restaurant is on the brink of bankruptcy. Big changes are needed to keep up with the times. Can youngest daughter Nina come to the rescue?

She is fighting for the family’s approval to open a nightclub in the restaurant banquet hall, but her infatuation with Calle turns her life upside down.

The future of the restaurant develops into a full-blown family conflict. But the real decision maker is Helga, the mother, who with assistance from head chef Backe, watches over the family business. She is now faced with the challenge of keeping the family together while securing the survival of the restaurant in a new age.

Over two series viewers will accompany the Löwander family and the restaurant staff through several decades of success and defeat, love affairs and conflicts, all accompanied by contemporary music and fashion.
